Inventory of assets of James SALTZMANN (extract)
The inventory of assets
has been the privileged source of the economic, social and cultural history
for many decades, but it has been used by the genealogists only in recent
years. Drawn up some days after the death, it enumerates the names of
the heirs, the movable possessions, the real estate and the debts of the
deceased. It permits one to estimate the ancestor's financial situation,
gives a good idea of their way of life and completes the information provided
by the parish records.
So, the first pages
of this inventory established after the death of James SALTZMANN are sufficient
to give us the names of his children and also his grandchildren. On the
contrary, several hours would be necessary to arrive at the same result
using birth records or other conventional means !
